The UK is weighing a new UK investor visa for wealthy foreign nationals. The proposed UK investor visa route would ask for a minimum investment of around £5 million in exchange for UK residency. Nothing has launched yet, and the final rules do not yet exist.
Reports suggest the UK investor visa route would be invite only. In other words, it would not work like a standard online visa that anyone can apply for. Instead, investors would be approached or pre-selected, leaving the government in tight control of who takes part.
The money would reportedly flow into priority sectors of the economy, such as fast growing British businesses, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and life sciences. The aim looks clear enough: attract investors who create real jobs and growth, not passive buyers. Property, in a clear break from the past, would not count as a qualifying investment.
Under the proposal, an investor would receive three years of UK residency, with a possible route to permanent residency after that. This timeline comes from circulated documents, however, not from confirmed government rules.
It would mark a significant shift if it goes ahead. The UK scrapped its previous Tier 1 Investor Visa in 2022, amid concerns about weak checks and the source of some funds. Since then, no direct route to UK residency has existed through large scale investment alone.
Any new route would almost certainly carry strict conditions. You would likely need to prove the source of your funds, show a clean financial history, and pass enhanced due diligence checks.
For now, this UK Investor visa remains a concept rather than an open door. You cannot apply today, and much could still change. If you are considering a move to the UK, the wise step is to wait for official guidance before acting.
