The Home Office has made some important changes to UK immigration rules, affecting skilled workers, employers, and individuals under the EU Settlement Scheme. These updates, announced on June 24, 2025 (HC 836) and July 1, 2025 (HC 997), are meant to simplify and improve the rules that govern immigration in the UK.
Headline Update: 60 Job Roles from Skilled Worker Visa Eligibility
The headline update is the overnight removal of over 60 job roles from the Skilled Worker visa eligibility list, effective from 22 July 2025. Check the full list below. Only those who held permission before this date will qualify under transitional arrangements.
Salary Threshold Increased for Skilled Worker Visa
The biggest change for Skilled Worker visas is the rise in salary thresholds. The salary for Row A has increased from £38,700 to £41,700, and other rows have seen similar increases. For example, Row G is now £28,200. Additionally, the Home Office has added new occupation codes to Tables 1a, 2aa, and 3a. There are transitional rules for anyone who already has permission before July 22, 2025.
New Temporary Shortage Occupation List
The Home Office has introduced a Temporary Shortage Occupation List that will apply to Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) issued before December 31, 2026. This list covers several key roles in sectors like CAD technicians, IT operations technicians, translators, welders, and construction workers. Check the full list below. For Care Workers and Senior Care Workers, sponsorship is now restricted to those who have previously held Skilled Worker permission or are currently employed by a sponsor.
New Rule on the EU Settlement Scheme
Starting from July 16, 2025, individuals with pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) will be able to apply for settled status after living in the UK for 30 months within a 5-year period, rather than needing to meet continuous residence requirements. This update follows a ruling from 2022 and aims to offer greater security to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens living in the UK.
Long Residence and Armed Forces Rule Changes
The rules for long residence applications have been updated to provide clearer guidance on how to assess lawful and unlawful stay, as well as how overstaying is handled. Changes to the Armed Forces and Civilian Employees section now make it simpler for foreign or Commonwealth personnel and their families to follow the application process.
