What is a Global Talent Visa?
- “Exceptional talent” - granted to established leaders with international recognition in their field. This tier provides a route to Settlement after 3 years of continuous residence.
- “Exceptional promise” - granted to emerging leaders who have not yet achieved that level of recognition. This tier can lead to settlement after 5 years (via endorsement from Art Council England or Tech Nation).
Who is eligible for the Global Talent Visa?
You're likely eligible if:
- Are a recognised international talent in the field of arts and culture, digital technology or academia and research.
- You have endorsement from a recognised body, or have won a significant internationally recognised prize for your talent.
This route may not be right for you if:
- You are under 18.
- You cannot prove your exceptional talent by way of endorsement or having won a prize.
Global Talent Visa Requirements
Earnings evidence
You do not need to have earned money in the UK to apply for a Global Talent Visa. However, thinking ahead to when you might want to Extend, or convert to Settlement, you will need to prove you have.
Specifically, you’ll have to show you have earned money in the UK in your endorsed field, or in a field related to the prize you relied on for your application, during the last grant of Global Talent leave.
Documents (Stage 2)
At stage 2, we’ll work together on a pack of documents for your Visa Application to the Home Office.
This will include a valid passport or other travel document. the endorsement letter, or documentary evidence of the prestigious prize, a tuberculosis test certificate (if you’ve been resident in a listed country) and evidence of relationship for any dependants, including marriage or civil partnership certificates and birth certificates.
Documents (Stage 1)
At Stage 1 , we’ll help you put together a document pack to evidence to the Endorsing Body that you are are a true leader in your field. This includes a CV, three letters of recommendation from established experts, and any further evidence requested by the relevant body. They will likely also require a Personal Statement setting out the intended contribution to the UK. Where a fast-track academic or research pathway is relied upon, evidence of the qualifying appointment, fellowship or named role will be needed.
Recognised prizes
This route is an alternative to being endorsed by a recognised body. You must be a holder of a prize named on the Home Office’s Prestigious Prizes List.
UK Visas and Immigration will verify the prize before issuing the visa. Only the named prizes on the list qualify, and a comparable award from the same institution will not normally be accepted.
Note that this applies at Stage 2 (see steps below).
Recognised endorsing bodies (continued)
UK Research and Innovation (via the Endorsed Funder route for Science and Innovation, or named roles on approved funded research projects).
Tech Nation (for Digital Technology - covering Software Engineering, AI, Cybersecurity, Fintech and Gaming, and Product and Engineering Leadership).
Recognised endorsing bodies
The Royal Society (for Natural and Medical Sciences).
The Royal Academy of Engineering.
The British Academy (for Humanities and Social Sciences).
Arts Council England (for Arts and Culture, including Film and TV, Fashion, Architecture and Design - as a distinct discipline from 1 July 2026).
Core requirements
You must be 18 years old, or over.
Most importantly, you must hold either:
- A valid endorsement from a recognised endorsing body
- Or, a qualifying “prestigious prize”
AY&J’s experts will help you obtain your endorsement/prize as part of our service.
What’s not necessary?
Unlike many other UK visas, the Global Talent Visa does not require you to have a UK job, or even a job offer. (This also means you don’t need a company to be your Sponsor, or to have a Certificate of Sponsorship.)
You also don’t need any English language qualifications at entry stage (you will only need this if you choose to convert to Settlement later).
Step-by-Step Application Process
Check if you can apply directly as a prestigious prize winner or if you need endorsement from an approved body in academia, arts and culture, or digital technology.
Complete the stage one endorsement form, select the correct endorsing body, and upload your evidence. If successful, you will receive an endorsement letter that you will use at the visa stage. You must then move to the visa application within three months.
Submit the visa application online from inside or outside the UK and pay the fees. You can include your partner and children as dependents in their own linked applications.
Either use the UK Immigration ID Check app if eligible or attend a biometric appointment. Inside the UK this is usually at a UKVCAS service point. Outside the UK, it is at a visa application centre run by TLScontact or VFS Global.
Coming to the Global Talent Visa UK documents, provide your passport, your endorsement letter or prize evidence, tuberculosis test results if required, and any sponsor consent if you studied in the UK in the last year.

After 3 years if you were endorsed under Exceptional Talent, endorsed by the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering or UKRI, or you applied with a prestigious prize.
After 5 years if you were endorsed under Exceptional Promise by Tech Nation or Arts Council England.
You must not spend more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12 months.
Family and settlement
Yes. Your partner and your children under 18 can apply as your dependants. They can work and study in the UK. Each dependant pays the £766 visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Eligibility and applying
No. There is no maintenance funds requirement for you or your dependants. You pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Comparing and extending
Global Talent Visa is meant for those who are already leaders or have the potential to be leaders in research, the arts and culture, or the digital technology. It usually doesn't require a job offer. To get a Skilled Worker Visa, you need a confirmed job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor that meets skill and salary requirements. Global Talent also usually gives you more options (in terms of job type, employer, etc.) and can speed up your path to permanent UK settlement in some cases.
Comparing and extending
Yes. You can ask to extend it for up to five years at a time, as long as you still meet the Global Talent Visa UK requirements (for example, your endorsement is still valid, your prize has not been taken away, and you can prove that you have earned money in your field).
Eligibility and applying
If you’ve received a prize that is on the government’s eligible list, you can apply for the Global Talent Visa without the endorsement stage. You must be the named winner and provide proof of the prize. Then you apply for the visa itself (you still need identity checks and supporting documents).
Eligibility and applying
Yes. You can switch from a Tier 2 (or Skilled Worker) visa to a Global Talent Visa from inside the UK, provided you meet the eligibility rules (e.g. either you have an eligible prestigious prize or you can get an endorsement).
