Our story in numbers
How does AY&J Solicitors clear each risk?
Common risk
- The wrong sub-route chosen for the engagement
- Certificate details that do not match the actual engagement
- The genuine temporary worker test left unevidenced
- Sponsor record-keeping gaps found at a compliance audit
- Maintenance funds of £1,270 left unevidenced by the sponsor
How we handle it
- We match the route to the work before the sponsor commits
- We check the certificate against the contract before it is assigned
- We build the evidence showing the role is real and time-limited
- We audit the files and close the gaps before the Home Office looks
- We confirm early whether your sponsor will certify maintenance for you

Frequently Asked Questions
Sponsor licence
You will want to check whether your sponsor already holds the right category of licence. We will review that position and tell you which route is open to you. That takes one conversation.
Stay, family and switching
It varies quite a lot by category. Seasonal Worker runs to just six months, and Creative and Charity both run to twelve. Religious, Exchange and International Agreement each run to 24 months.
Sponsor licence
An officer checks whether your records actually match what you told the Home Office. You will need right-to-work checks, contracts, and contact histories available on the day. We would suggest rehearsing it.
Choosing a route
Your employer does not sponsor you on that particular route. A Home Office approved scheme operator holds the licence and issues your certificate instead. The same pattern applies on Government Authorised Exchange.
Sponsor licence
Yes, and this is where people get caught out. The licence has to cover the exact Temporary Worker sub-route that you are using. A Skilled Worker licence does not extend to any of these categories.
Costs and timing
No, not in every case. Where the visa is under six months and you apply from outside the UK, it does not apply. Seasonal Workers are exempt from it as well.
Costs and timing
No, none of the six sponsored Temporary Worker routes attracts the Immigration Skills Charge. That makes them materially cheaper for sponsors than the Skilled Worker route. The savings run to thousands per worker.
Costs and timing
You will want to allow around eight weeks for the sponsor licence stage. The visa decision then takes about three weeks from outside the UK, or eight weeks inside. Priority services can shorten it.
Sponsor licence
The sponsor does, and the cost cannot be passed on. The licence costs £611 from 8 April 2026, flat across every sponsor size regardless of turnover. The certificate then adds £55 for each worker sponsored.
Costs and timing
The application fee is £340 for each person applying, from 8 April 2026. The health surcharge is usually £1,035 a year on top of that, unless your stay is under six months. Sponsors pay separately.
Stay, family and switching
On most of these routes, yes. Creative, Charity, Religious, Government Authorised Exchange and International Agreement routes all permit dependants to apply. Seasonal Worker does not allow family members to come to the UK at all.
Choosing a route
Yes, in every one of the sponsored categories. You will need a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed sponsor before the visa application can be made. The sponsor issues it, and you cannot obtain one yourself.
Stay, family and switching
Usually yes, from inside the UK, once you hold a qualifying sponsored job offer. Seasonal Worker is the one exception, because that route does not permit switching. Time already spent does not count towards settlement.
Choosing a route
No. Youth Mobility is entirely unsponsored, so it sits well outside the six Temporary Worker categories. It suits young nationals of participating countries who want to work freely in the UK.
Choosing a route
It depends on the nature of the work and on who is sponsoring you. Creative Worker covers performance and production crew, while Government Authorised Exchange covers approved training placements. We will confirm the fit first.
