A US national and her British partner had been together four years and had never lived in the same city. The unmarried partner route normally expects two years of cohabitation. The evidence had to carry the case instead.

At a glance

  • Client: US national in the UK since 2018, on a Skilled Worker visa
  • Sponsor: British citizen, resident in the Midlands
  • Matter: Unmarried partner application, in-country
  • The obstacle: Four-year relationship, no period of cohabitation
  • Instructed: 30 March 2026

How they found us

She contacted us through our website on 21 March 2026 and instructed us nine days later. She told us she was impressed by how quickly we came back to her.

The challenge

Four years together, with the applicant working in London and the sponsor's home in the Midlands. They had never lived at the same address.

  • Cohabitation evidence is the usual pressure point on this route.
  • The client wanted to submit as soon as possible, with priority service if available.
  • She also had a possible alternative route on ten-year long residence, which meant the strategy had to be chosen rather than assumed.

What we did

  • Confirmed the financial requirement was comfortably met. Both parties individually earned above the threshold, so the case did not have to lean on savings or third-party support.
  • Catalogued what the couple already had. Written statements, letters from parents, friends and family attesting to the four years, dated message records, time-stamped photographs, a written travel history, and evidence of the sponsor transferring money towards London rent and shared costs.
  • Built the case on continuity rather than an address. Weekend-by-weekend contact, joint travel, and both families having met, evidenced over the full four years.
  • Set out the long-residence alternative. So the client could choose the route rather than default into it.

Why it matters

The rules expect a shape of relationship that plenty of real relationships do not have. Two people with demanding jobs in different cities are not less committed than two people on one tenancy agreement, but they have to prove it differently. The evidence-gathering starts long before the application does.
