Moving from New Zealand to the UK needs more than an Electronic Travel Authorisation. An ETA can support an eligible visit, but not a move or ordinary employment. You will need a suitable route unless you already hold British citizenship or UK immigration status.

New Zealand citizens aged 18 to 35 can use Youth Mobility. UK Ancestry may suit someone with a qualifying grandparent. This guide can help you choose a UK visa for New Zealand citizens, covering both personal and business options.

Start with the permission your plans require

If you plan to move to the UK from New Zealand, start with the purpose of the move rather than the application form. A job, a partner, recognised talent, a business transfer or a temporary overseas experience each point to a different route. A careful choice now can prevent a later change of plan from becoming an immigration problem.

Personal routes available to New Zealand citizens

For anyone moving from New Zealand to the UK, the usual work, family and talent options sit alongside the New Zealand Youth Mobility visa. The table gives a practical starting point for personal visas, their eligibility and requirements.

A British citizenship check and a UK Ancestry eligibility check may also be worthwhile before preparing an application. Those possibilities depend on the individual family history rather than New Zealand nationality alone.

Business routes for a company-led move

Where a company is involved, establish both the individual route and whether the UK organisation can sponsor or receive them. It is worth resolving that before a transfer, hire or expansion plan is fixed.

Documents to prepare before you apply

When moving from New Zealand to the UK, documents need to support a clear reason for the application. You will need to check the current GOV.UK requirements, because evidence can differ between routes.

  1. A valid New Zealand passport and evidence of any British citizenship or existing UK immigration status.
  2. Route-specific evidence, such as a Certificate of Sponsorship, Youth Mobility savings, relationship documents, employer records or endorsement evidence.
  3. Financial evidence where the route requires it, presented for the period and in the format set by the current rules.
  4. A certified translation for any document that is not in English or Welsh.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an ETA to move from New Zealand to the UK?

No. A New Zealand passport holder can apply for an ETA for an eligible visit of up to 6 months, but an ETA does not grant permission to live in the UK or undertake work that requires immigration permission.

What makes the Youth Mobility Scheme different for New Zealand citizens?

Eligible New Zealand citizens can apply between 18 and 35. The route starts with 2 years and can be extended once for a further year. It does not permit dependent family members, and it is not a direct route to settlement.

Could a UK Ancestry route apply to me?

It may be relevant if you are a Commonwealth citizen aged 17 or over and have a qualifying grandparent. The current GOV.UK eligibility guidance explains the birthplace requirements, financial position and intention to work that you will need to evidence.

Will I need an English language test?

A New Zealand national does not usually need to prove English for the Skilled Worker route because New Zealand is listed as a majority English-speaking country. The requirements still need to be checked for the route and stage of application you choose.

Can my partner or children move with me?

It depends on the route. The Youth Mobility Scheme does not allow dependants on the application. On eligible work, talent and family routes, a partner or child may be able to apply where the current rules and family circumstances are met.

Choose the route before you set the move in motion

Moving from New Zealand to the UK is easier to manage when the route reflects the life you are actually planning. That decision affects the evidence you will need, the timing and whether settlement could be part of the plan.

Before making commitments, check whether British citizenship, ancestry, Youth Mobility or a longer-term work, family, talent or business route is the right fit.
