Swedes have crossed to Britain for generations, but the rules changed sharply once Brexit closed free movement. To move to the UK from Sweden, it used to only require only a passport. Now you need to know where you need a visa which depends almost entirely on one fact about your past. The fact is whether you were already living in the UK when the transition period ended.

Everything else follows from your answer, and this guide takes you through it.

Where should a Swedish national begin?

With any move to the UK from Sweden, it helps to begin with the calendar. If you were a resident here before the end of 2020, the EU Settlement Scheme usually applies. It protects the rights you built up under free movement.

Arriving for the first time is different. The visa route you need depends on what you plan to do here. Work, family, study, and business each have their own door, mapped out in the tables below.

Which route fits a personal move?

People move to the UK from Sweden for three main reasons: a job, a partner, or a university place. Work and family both lead to settlement in time. Study can be a stepping stone into work once you graduate.

The table sets out who each personal route is built for and how long it takes to reach settlement.

RouteWho it is forPrimary requirementLeads to settlement
Skilled Worker visaSwedes with a confirmed UK jobA licensed sponsor behind the roleYes, after 5 years
Global Talent visaSwedish talent in science, tech or artsBacking from a recognised bodyYes, after 3 or 5 years
Spouse or partner visaSwedes joining a British or settled partnerA relationship that is genuine and continuingYes, after 5 years
Dependant visaFamily joining a Swedish visa holderA qualifying tie to the lead applicantFollows the main visa
Standard Visitor visaSwedes on a short staySufficient funds and intent to leaveNo
Health and Care Worker visaSwedes in qualifying care workA sponsored health or care postYes, after 5 years
Graduate RouteSwedish graduates from a UK courseA finished UK degreeNo (can switch)
Student visaSwedes coming to studyA place at a licensed institutionNo (can switch)
EU Settlement SchemeSwedes resident here pre-2021Living in the UK before 31 December 2020Yes (settled status)

Settlement itself arrives in stages. Most work and family routes let you apply for settlement, or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), after five continuous years. A year beyond that, you can apply for British citizenship.

Which route fits a business move?

Founders and investors are steered in a different direction from employees. Planning to launch a company, back one, or send staff to a UK office? The business routes below are built for that, though not all lead to settlement.

What paperwork will you need to gather?

What you need to assemble varies by route, yet a work application almost always turns on the same short list. Starting on it early matters, because a couple of these documents are slow to obtain.

  1. A valid Swedish passport, plus a certified English translation of any document issued in another language.
  2. A Certificate of Sponsorship, which your licensed employer generates once the job offer is confirmed.
  3. Proof of the savings the rules require, so the Home Office can see you will not need public funds.
  4. Evidence of your relationship, where your application rests on a partner or family member settled in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Swedish citizen still need a visa for the UK?

Usually, yes. Anyone arriving since 2021 to live or work applies for a visa, just as a non-EU citizen would. The exception is EU Settlement Scheme status.

Is the EU Settlement Scheme still an option?

It remains open to anyone resident in the UK before 31 December 2020. If you missed the 2021 deadline, a late application can still succeed. You will need to provide evidence of a genuine reason for the delay.

What does the move actually cost?

You will want to budget for the visa fee, an English test, and translations. The Immigration Health Surcharge adds £1,035 a year per adult. The cost of moving to the UK from Sweden grows with each family member you bring.

Is a job offer essential for working here?

A Skilled Worker visa from Sweden does require one, and the employer must already hold a sponsor licence. Talent and business routes work differently and need no offer at all.

Can a Swede visit the UK without a visa?

Yes. Swedish passport holders can spend up to six months here as visitors, visa-free. Visitor status rules out paid work of any kind.

Ready to take the next step?

A move to the UK from Sweden hinges so much on your own history. A single conversation usually saves a great deal of guesswork.

If you have a job offer, the Skilled Worker route is the natural starting point. If your partner is British or settled in the UK, a UK family visa from Sweden is likely the right one. Earlier UK residence may point back to the EU Settlement Scheme.
