For most people, a move from Hong Kong to the UK starts with one question. Do you hold BN(O) status? If you do, a direct path to settling and to citizenship opens up. No job offer or sponsor is required.

If you do not, a move from Hong Kong to the UK still works through the standard routes. This guide sorts out which one.

Does BN(O) status apply to you?

For a move from Hong Kong to the UK, BN(O) suits those who registered as British nationals overseas before 1997. Close family is covered too. It grants two and a half or five years of leave, renewable, on what is often called the five-plus-one route.

If that status is not yours, the tables below map the work, family, and study routes to the same destination.

Which route fits a personal move?

Each row shows a personal route, who it suits, and how settlement follows.

Which route fits a business move?

Some Hong Kongers arrive to start or run a company rather than take the BN(O) or a job route. The business options below cover founders, investors, and firms sending staff to a UK office.

RouteWho it is forMain requirementPath to settlement
Innovator Founder visaHong Kong founders launching in the UKA scalable, endorsed idea3 years to ILR
Global Business MobilityOverseas firms posting staff overA tie to an overseas parent firmTemporary, no direct route

The Innovator Founder route draws the most interest, since an endorsed, scalable idea can reach settlement in three years.

What paperwork will you need?

The list turns on your route, though most applications share a common core. It is worth starting on it early, because one or two items are slow to obtain.

  1. Your Hong Kong or BN(O) passport, as proof of both identity and, where it applies, your status.
  2. A tuberculosis test result from a UK-approved clinic in Hong Kong, which the Home Office requires from applicants there.
  3. Where you apply through family, papers that establish your link to the relative or partner settled in the UK.
  4. Certified English translations of any document not already in English.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need BN(O) status to move to the UK?

No. BN(O) is the simplest route for those who qualify. Hong Kongers without it use the same work, family, and study routes as anyone else.

Who can apply for the BN(O) visa now?

BN(O) status holders and their close family. Since 9 February 2026, adult children who were under 18 at the handover can now apply in their own right.

Does the BN(O) route lead to British citizenship?

Yes. After five years of continuous residence, you can apply for settlement, then British citizenship a year later. No salary or sponsor applies at any stage.

What if I am not eligible for BN(O)?

The Skilled Worker route is the usual choice for work, and it requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor. A UK family visa from Hong Kong or the Global Talent route may fit others.

Will I need a tuberculosis test?

Yes. Hong Kong sits on the Home Office list of places where a TB certificate is required. It is worth booking that test early.

Ready to take the next step?

Whether your route is BN(O) or a work or family visa, mapping the move early makes it smoother. The cost of moving to the UK from Hong Kong varies by route. Those with BN(O) hold one of the most direct paths to citizenship anywhere.
