Moving from Denmark to the UK: Your 2026 Route Guide

Many people assume a move from Denmark to the UK means paying more for almost everything. That assumption is worth testing, because on most day-to-day costs the UK is the cheaper of the two.
Around 30,000 Danes already live here. The short hop across the North Sea makes the leap smaller than it feels. The route for your move from Denmark to the UK depends mainly on one thing: when you last lived here.
Where does a Danish national start?
It helps to start with the calendar rather than the paperwork. Were you living here before the end of 2020? If so, your rights most likely rest with the EU Settlement Scheme, which preserved your free-movement rights.
Arriving for the first time turns the question into a practical one: what will you do once you are here? The personal and business routes are laid out below.
Which route fits a personal move?
For most Danes, the reason is work or family, with study a common third. What changes between them is the evidence you gather and how soon you can settle. The table below lays both out.
| Route | Who it is for | Main requirement | Path to settlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skilled Worker visa | Danes holding a UK job offer | A licensed sponsor behind the role | 5 years to ILR |
| Global Talent visa | Danes leading in tech or science | An approved endorsement or prize | 3 or 5 years to ILR |
| Spouse or partner visa | Danes with a British or settled partner | A genuine, ongoing relationship | 5 years to ILR |
| Dependant visa | Family joining a Danish visa holder | A qualifying tie to the main applicant | Tied to main visa |
| Standard Visitor visa | Danes here for a short stay | Funds for the trip; intent to leave | No |
| Health and Care Worker visa | Danes in eligible care roles | A sponsored health or care role | 5 years to ILR |
| Graduate Route | Danish graduates of a UK degree | A completed UK degree | No (can switch) |
| Student visa | Danes studying in the UK | A place at a licensed provider | No (can switch) |
| EU Settlement Scheme | Danes resident here before 2021 | UK residence before 31 December 2020 | Yes (settled status) |
Five continuous years on most work or family routes lets you apply for settlement, or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
Which route fits a business move?
Not every move from Denmark to the UK is about employment. Danes building a company, backing one, or transferring a team have their own routes. Some lead to settlement, others cap at a fixed stay.
| Route | Who it is for | Main requirement | Path to settlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Business Mobility | Overseas firms posting staff over | A tie to an overseas parent firm | Temporary, no direct route |
| Sponsor Licence | UK employers recruiting Danes | Genuine UK trading presence | Enables sponsorship |
| Innovator Founder visa | Danish founders launching in the UK | A scalable, endorsed idea | 3 years to ILR |
| Scale-up Worker visa | Danes joining a high-growth firm | A qualifying offer from the firm | 5 years to ILR |
| Temporary Worker | Danes on short contracts | Sponsorship for a set role | No |
Studying here on a Student visa before the Graduate route is a common first step for younger arrivals.
What paperwork will you need?
What you gather depends on the route, but a work move rarely varies much. Pulling it together early helps, as a document or two can be slow.
- Your Danish passport, valid for the whole stay, plus certified translations of anything not in English.
- For a job, the Certificate of Sponsorship your employer issues once the offer is confirmed.
- Enough savings, held for the period the rules specify, to prove you can support yourself.
- For a family route, documents showing your relationship to the person you are joining.
Frequently asked questions
Do Danish citizens still need a visa to move to the UK?
Almost always. A Dane coming to live or work since 2021 applies for a visa, just like anyone outside Europe. The exception is existing EU Settlement Scheme status.
Is the EU Settlement Scheme still open to me?
It stays open to people who were here before 31 December 2020. A late claim can work where you can explain, with good reason, why the deadline slipped.
Can I drive in the UK on my Danish licence?
For a while, yes. If you move here before turning 67, your Danish licence stays valid until you are 70. That spares you an immediate exchange.
Is the UK really more expensive than Denmark?
Usually not. The cost of moving to the UK from Denmark surprises people: groceries and eating out run cheaper here. Only rent is reliably higher, so where you settle matters most.
How long can I stay in the UK without a visa?
Six months at a time. Danes count as non-visa nationals, so short trips need no visa, but visitor status rules out paid work.
Ready to take the next step?
The right way to move from Denmark to the UK comes from your own history. A job offer points toward a Skilled Worker visa from Denmark. A partner here points toward a UK family visa from Denmark, and earlier residence may reopen the EU Settlement Scheme.
